High activity in the first quarter was observed in the food sector. Food sector in the first quarter of this year showed increased activity. The closing of Alma supermarket chain has resulted in the expansion of other competing brands which have occupied the space previously reserved by the operator. Examples of such transactions include: Carrefour in Galeria Olimp in Lublin and in Aura shopping centre in Olsztyn, Intermarche in Galeria Młociny and Piotr i Paweł in Klif. The premises of MarcPol supermarket chain are also being absorbed (eg. Carrefour in Galeria Słoneczna in Radom). Likewise, Tesco is announcing closing of several shops this year, what will widen the offer of available retail space. Currently discount food supermarkets present their expansion flexibility – in April Biedronka opened its store on Krakow’s Old Town, in the former Spiski Palace. Fast developing chains in convenience segment are Żabka, purchased in Q1 2017 by CVC Capital Partners, and Carrefour Express.
